What you should know
Timing decides whether you get flowers. Azaleas set next spring's buds within weeks of finishing this spring's bloom — shear them in fall and you have cut off the entire show before it started. We prune spring bloomers right after they finish and save the hard cuts for the ones that can take it.
For badly overgrown hedges, taking it all in one pass often kills the plant. We usually stage a heavy reduction across two seasons so it comes back full rather than bare and woody.
